The funny thing about respect is that, you can’t differentiate what is and what isn’t respect. When you say that you want someone who respects you, it could be translated into various forms of respect. I respect you, therefore, I don’t tell you off and allow you to live in denial. I respect you, therefore, I am silent. I respect you, therefore, I will obey your orders and wishes. I respect you, therefore, I understand your principles. I respect you, therefore, I will not raise my voice.Or does by respecting somebody means you would be honest and frank with that person and tell her/him things that she/he doesn’t want to know? Or that you would apologize knowing fully well that it wasn’t your fault? I don’t know. I guess just like being in love, respect is always on the borderline with stupidity. Like, you can’t differentiate what’s right and wrong sometimes. You’re not sure when’s the right time to stand up and say hey, I’m not going to respect you anymore because you did this and that.

It is so underrated these days. People just don’t respect other people anymore. Everything’s a bit too modern for my liking. Everything and anything goes. It’s a free country. There’s nothing wrong about being wrong. There’s nothing right about being right. It’s now cool to be uncool, fashionable to be old-fashioned. So in the world where anything is possible, nothing is ever a mistake, where does respect fit in that? Is it even relevant anymore? Or am I the only one who thinks that it is the one value that we musn’t forego and thus, if we have respect, for each other, for the elderly, for the children, for our lovers and friends – things would be different, somehow. Just think about it. Think hard about the times when you ignored your friend’s sms on purpose. Think hard about the times you did not pick up the phone because you were just too lazy. Think hard about the times you have lied. What about the time your friends might need you and you weren’t there? If you have respect, and you respect these people in your life, you wouldn’t have done those things.
It’s so difficult to be respectful sometimes. Especially when it is not reciprocated. Just like love, it should never be a one-way thing.
