more on raya

My unforgettable raya memory will have to be the simple but sweet celebration back in the days when we used to go back to Penang for raya. Ok, macam la lama sangat, padahal just about two years ago je tak balik. When both my grandparents were still around, the whole family would go back – my aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone. When I was much younger and most of us couldn’t afford to stay in a hotel, we all stayed in my granny’s house. All crammed up like pendatang asing. Some even had to sleep in the kitchen! But of course, you know this already, that’s where the fun lies. My own family would make it a point to go back about a week before raya or at least 3-4 days prior to it. Somehow, we’ve always managed to berpuasa in Penang. So what we did with all those free time was to shop for raya clothes! I know, there weren’t that many choices but still, it was quite fun. The most exciting part would be buka puasa, of course! We ate on the floor je but the dishes…oh my, banyak gila! More than 10 maybe. Definitely spoilt for choice. I think I still have a picture of my brother and I break fasting in the same manner when we were kids. It’s like a tradition in that house -to put the supra on the floor and sit in a huge circle. Favourite routine. And after that, for those yang rajin, they would proceed with terawih and for the lazybums like myself and my young cousins, we would play with the bunga api! So much fun!

After sahur, don’t expect to sleep until about 7 a.m. because the aunties would be busy gossiping away! Yak yak yak, because we had to share the same ‘living room’, it was usually very difficult for me to go back to sleep listening to their high-pitched voices. Orang Penang cakap macam nak gaduh right? Hehe. On the first day of raya, there would be a massive jam outside the two available bathrooms. Yes, only two, to be shared by berapa puluh orang. Massive jam kalah Federal Highway. And just like what one would normally do to avoid traffic jams, wake up early and go go go! I was one of the usual early-birds, obviously, not to your surprise. Another highlight of the morning would be everyone going up down left right to get ready. The girls would be busy putting the make-up on. Ohh, and yes, time to take out all your gelang bling blings darlings! Haha. Raya je, have to wear something gold. It’s a must, even until today, even though I’m not much of a ‘pakai barang’ person, I still oblige just to keep the tradition alive. Thank God now the jewelleries are much nicer and modern. If not, rantai ‘pound’ lah jawabnya. We all have one. Do you have one too? Hehe. After all the chaos has died down and sembahyang raya dah habis, time to sit around in a circle again for raya breakfast! Somebody will recite the doa and then nyam nyam nyam off we go. Yes, eat first, salam later. Hehe. Oh I just loveee raya breakfast with nasi impit and ayam masak merah (my favourite!).

Once the plates have been cleared, my grandparents would sit on the sofa and we would all line up to salam-salam, cry and all the drama plus time to collect duit raya! I used to be able to rake in at least a thousand ringgit for raya alone! I miss those days. And then we would all go out to beraya – sometimes together, sometimes separately. My family used to go to Bukit Mertajam to beraya at my father’s side when his mother and grandmother were still around. On the first night of raya, we would be at home, entertaining guests. Same goes to the second day but usually on the second day, my grandmother’s Chinese siblings and their children and grandchildren would come to beraya at the house. It’s totally different from KL lah, no matter what people say. You cannot try to ‘recreate’ the kampong feel in KL. It’s just not the same. But we can try. Back in Penang, I had a reason to wear new clothes everyday because memang everyday busy. Here in KL, well, I can recycle my clothes, no problem. Woohoo.

Tonight we’re going to eat good foood (again!). Ohhh, how in the world am I going to maintain this weight? Oh my oh my. Yes, I mean it when I say ‘maintain’. Because previously, it was a little bit difficult for me to find the right size. With my current weight, I can fit into all the dresses I tried on at all the bridal shops! Really! Except for the length la, but otherwise, macam custom-made. Best gila. I’m so happy. :))) By the way this is definitely not going to be the last post on raya because once open house dah start in full swing, I'll update on that too. After all, raya sebulan!

reflect - one week of happiness!

First up! Let's reflect on the joyous and blessed Syawal that we've celebrated last week. How was your raya? I'm sure it was also filled with lots of fun and love! I know mine was. I feel extremely happy and each day, I've never failed to realize how lucky I am. It was a super fulfilling week because I was not only surrounded by my family and relatives but also because my fiance took the whole week off too. Hehe. So it was pretty much like a semester break for us. We took every opportunity to meet up whenever we could. When I'm not with my family, I'm with him and when he's not with his family, he's with me. I guess that's what LDR does to you. You tend to be a bit pushy and rushy (is there such a word??) because you want to do everything all at the same time. In short, the week long break was a blast. The best ever raya in recent times.
Most people have started going to work this morning. No wonder the traffic was pretty heavy on the road. Heavy like the heavy hearts yang kena pergi kerja. :) I logged on to blogger having a few things to blog about in mind but now, I just don't feel like it. Padahal those things are importante. Like finally, confirming who took my phone and I am THIS close to typing her name here in capital letters. When I'm up for it, I'll have an entry just for that, with her name and all. :) Other things, like an e-mail circulated on the internet regarding ... Ok, this one I can't just write a sentence and leave you at that because then people would misunderstand it. It requires a proper explanation, which like I've said, I don't have the mambo jumbo to do it now. Ohhh yes, there is one thing I can blog about with just a line or two. I finally found my perfect wedding ring and we bought it already. At such a low price too. Serious, rasa macam murah sangat nak beli dua tiga. Tak sangka out of all the rings, I fell in love with the simplest and cheapest. Hehe. Why should I force myself to buy an expensive ring just because of its name when I don't feel anything when I wear it? But this ring that I've chosen, is just so... ME. Hmm, you know? Sometimes you know when something is just made for you and it fits your taste and your personality and everything. (Or am I sugar coating the fact that we just don't have enough budget?hehehe). Certain things I can compromise, I'm a bit of a tak kisah girl. My only weakness kan is handbag...itu je I have no form of self-control whatsoever. Other things, negotiable. *ting!*
It's so easy to handle hunger when you're fasting but the moment you're not, you feel like you cannot go on for another hour without food. That's how I feel now. Hehe. Allow me to go and find food in somebody's room and do some work and I'll get back to you on those few things I wanted to blog about - when I have the time. Ta~

festive mood

Everyone's talking/blogging about raya and how can one help it when raya is just one day away?? Wheeeee. My relatives are here and mood raya sudah mari! So far so good, we have all things raya ready, like those festive blinking lights all around the balcony, kuih raya - this year I've become very 'mak mak' by going crazy over kuih raya and buying lots of them for the house, so far a few hundreds have gone into kuih raya alone! - I finally feel like a government servant hehe, karaoke filled with raya songs and a few rounds of practice, baju raya (!!) - I've finally found something to wear on the first day of raya but otherwise, ala kadar saja because I need to save a LOTTT of money for the wedding dress. Since I'll be in KL for raya, I'm thinking of going to the shops on the eve of Raya itself because I heard that most of the clothes will be on super duper mega sale! We'll see.
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri (please be proud of our language and spelling) to everyone! Maaf Zahir Batin if I have ever said anything hurtful either intentionally or unintentionally. Maaf Zahir Batin for all my wrongful actions. And in return, I forgive you for everything that you've said to or about me. Even though it is beyond my knowledge but I forgive you. Hehe. But there are certain people that I can't forgive, for obvious reasons. Maybe I will in the future but I can't now because I'm not nice enough and I don't have the strength to do so. Just not yet. Generally, all is forgiven. Hehe. Enjoy all the yummy dishes please and forget about that stupid diet. Live life to the fullest and dieting just kills it all man!
:))) Peace.

uno dos tres

I needed a good laugh and I had more than I wished for on Monday night for buka puasa. With the girls, nothing is impossible and the world is my oyster. (Teringat oyster omelette at Pavilion's food court...aghh!!) One of us pointed out how much we've changed since last year's Ramadhan. From one Ramadhan to another; you can definitely see the changes.

This was in 2007. Kak Tinie just got married to Cat and was expecting her first child. Meq was just about to get engaged. Kak Anis was not seriously involved with Nazrin yet. As for me…well, I can’t share it here but I remember this period. It was tough. But I pulled through. No wait, we pulled through. :)

This was last year – 2008. It was one of the best buka puasa session ever because we managed to persuade all our studs to join us, even though they ended up being so quiet as we laughed too much. They aren’t half as funny as we are. ;p Changes? Kak Tinie became a mother of one cute daughter, Meq got married to Ajee and was pregnant with lil Farel, Kak Anis started wearing tudung, Ayu was in a relationship with Acip, I was without any title but ever so happily in a relationship with Kiki. Hehe.

And this year! Kak Tinie now wears the hijab/tudung, Meq is a yummy mummy, Kak Anis is married, Ayu broke off with her boyfriend (kids, sheesh! ;p) and I am engaged to be married! ps; I am still waiting for a proper group photo. For now, just us two. ;p

I wonder what would the changes be for next year? It’s interesting and amazing to observe these changes and to know that we’ve been through every step together makes it even sweeter!

How do you make a friendship last? Treat your friends like family. Love ‘em, hate ‘em like family. Need ‘em like you need your family. And then everything else will follow suit. Our little family is definitely growing! Can’t wait to share the many special days ahead with each and every one of you.

Oh by the way, we can definitely go to Pizza Uno again. Enjoyed the baked pasta tremendously! Darling fiancé, I will bring you there soon okays. Good pasta, good company, perfect night out.

I am feeling rather sentimental now that there is only four days left of Ramadhan (including today!). Terlalu cepat. Terawih pun I missed a few days. There is more to Ramadhan than just fasting. For me, it means so much more. Tak payah la nak emotional here kan, nanti people will say ‘enough already!’. Just allow me to be sentimental. And let’s all pray that we are able to welcome Ramadhan again next year. It’s not over yet and already I’m missing it. Haha.

There's a majlis berbuka puasa today at our house. Good foooood. Bye.

drama no.1000

I'm in a dilemma. What started out as a trivial matter, has now blown out of proportion and I am now, confused and lost. I don't know if I have any rights or any privileges. Truthfully, sometimes I don't even know where I stand. Where do I go from here?

i'll be the biggest fan of your life

This is for those who are not in my friends' list in facebook. Because I promised to upload my engagement pictures and I didn't. Otherwise, do not click. I'm not forcing it down your throat. By the way, if you're a reader of this blog, surely you must be a friend or someone I know or someone who knows me right? So why aren't you in my fb list? Answer me! My only conclusion is that you are all strangers! Hello stranger, is my pencuri phone still reading this? :) May God bless my good intentions always. Amin.

you know i wantchaaa

I don't know why, every time I hear Pitbull's I Know You Want Me, it reminds me of him. Haha, the song cracks me up every single time. I have this super funny image dancing in my mind. Him and the facial expressions that he is capable of doing combined with that song, funny funny. Whatever, that song is just so him!! LOL. That's it.

ps; I suck at taking my own pictures hence the man is one-eyed.

the month after

I was thinking of changing my blog layout. Add a little colour and pictures to it. But then I got bored browsing through the templates available online. So I guess Imma stick with this. Until another round of inspiration and enthusiasm kicks in. But Mims I like your gambar atas tu, teach me how to do it please? I want to copy, like how we used to copy copy homework. Hehe.

By the way, am I seeing the right figure at the top of this blog? Is it really F-O-U-R? Do you know how fast time flies? Do you know that 4 months is actually 4 weeks in wedding-time? Panic? Panic? Let me tell you a true story. I haven't bought a single thing for hantaran. :) GOSH I'm so proud of myself, I can be so careless like that eh? I think I will buy everything in November or December. And then there's the guest list. Jaja completed hers. I have yet to finalize mine. Ok, I'm not really telling the truth because I have my guest list already but I'm still adding and deleting (oopss!) names from the list so I wouldn't say it's complete yet, no? I have not finalized my dress for a few occasions too. Honestly, I've started preparing for the big day since merisik. And yet, when the time comes, I still feel like I have not done enough.

4 months tu sangat pendek. Most importantly, am I mentally prepared for it? We keep on focusing on material things and forget about the soul. It gives me the creeps sometimes. Am I prepared to change? To be a different person? I know people say that hey, you're just married, but you're still the same person. How can you be the same person when so many aspects of your life has changed? I'm going to have a new family, a home to call my own, new responsibilities - I'm going to share my whole life after these 4 months, with someone. Isn't that life-changing, self-changing and all the changes in the world put together? The jitters that I feel is not a sign of uncertainty. It's a different kind of jitter. It's more about me. On whether I'd be able to do this or not, whether I'd be a good ..wife (okay, it still feels weird to type that word), whether I'd be able to take care of the house(!!) - I need a whole lot of training on this part. I admit I've never done any work around the house before so this is definitely an area I've got to practice hard. Takutnya!

People tend to forget about the things that they have to handle after the wedding and they're usually just excited about the wedding itself, not marriage. Whenever we feel excited, we're excited about the big day and all the pretty things that will surround us on that day. After the wedding is over and the excitement has died down and relatives have gone back home and friends have stopped congratulating you, what happens next? Just you and the man you married, and your new world begins. :) I am excited about both - the wedding and also marriage - not the idea of being married. Because I know that the 'idea' is usually more ideal than what it will actually turn out to be. At the same time, I know I shouldn't worry too much and just go with the course of things because spending the rest of my life with him sounds absolutely exciting.

This was meant to be a very short post, tiba-tiba sampai sini. Hish, so personal tau! ;p

yellow ferry

Yes I was in Penang and I had sooooo much fun even if it was just for the weekend. I met up with my fiance (ehemm gedik) in Penang, he came down 'all the way' from Alor Star. Alor Star isn't that far from Penang. It took him about an hour or so to reach the island. Remember my tart gulung? He bought me a box from the ever famous Pekan Rabu. Haha, happy okay!! Glams. So I've got one now. Let's see whether it's really delicious or not. On Friday we went to berbuka at Hai Nan town, Jetty. It's at Weld Quay, right next to the ferry terminal. If you're in Penang and you want something different, other than nasi kandar (but don't be silly lah, please give priority to nasi kandar if you're in Penang), Hai Nan town serves really delicious nyonya dishes. It's one of my family's favourite restaurants in Penang. Every time we're there, a visit to the restaurant is a must. Among our favourite dishes are curry tumis pedas (don't get mistaken with curry asam pedas, which is not as tasty) and inchi kabin (special fried chicken). And don't forget to try its dessert, bubur pulut hitam. Perghhhh. It is served hot with just the perfect amount of santan. You'd want more, I kid you not. Unluckily for you, I forgot to snap pictures of the dishes even though I've made a mental reminder to myself not to forget it this time around. I've been meaning to take pictures of it. :( I only have pictures of myself and him, minus the food. Haha. And so it was really exciting to be able to bring him to berbuka at that place. He enjoyed the food (of course) and the view....ahh, gorgeous! Simply breathtaking at night. Macam dekat overseas with all the lights, ferries, yachts... I only have pictures of the place in the evening. Malam dah lupa. Tapi the ambience was really pretty and romantic! We sat by the quay, table for two plus the scenary, perfect perfect memorable night. :) Selalu pergi with my family je kan, so it was my first time there with someone so darn special. Hehe. Hmmmm dreamy!
After dinner topped with the not-to-be-missed dessert, we decided to just drive around the island. We passed by a few places that hold special memories for me. Like, the apek jual apom pisang by the roadside near the huge Maybank building. My favourite since I was a kid until today! And then there's Jalan Kelawei, there's a nice kedai makan which sells malay dishes with its specialty being the fish head curry (Malay style, not mamak). We came to a stop at Gurney Drive. That night the place was especially quiet because the Chinese had some religious event going on, so some stalls were closed. Buttttt, my 'muar chee' stall was open and that was all I cared about. Muar chee juga adalah my favourite since I was a kid. I used to buy it at Gurney Drive lah but from a different vendor. Rasa sama je, thank God. Muar chee is made out of rice balls (I think) and then it is dipped in crushed peanuts, topped with bawang kering. It is chewy and it is yummyyyy. So we bought three packets and ate 'em in the car. Haha.
We continued our journey back to my late grandma's house. My aunts live there and my family would also sleep over at the house whenever we're back in Penang. We don't stay in hotels unless we really have to, like, if my other aunts and uncles are also back from KL and there's not enough space in the house. Otherwise, we prefer to stay in the house I grew up in. :) It was so sentimental seeing him in that house, I never thought the little me, the little girl who used to live there and entertain her grandma's friends with songs from Engelbert Humperdinck (memang ol' skool, my grandfather's influence la tu), would one day bring home a man that she's about to marry, in the same house, more than 20 years later. I showed him the room I used to share with my grandparents, and the shops I used to go to, and of course, ini wajib, I showed him my 'tadika' (if you can call it that). He had a good laugh. There's a whole different story about my pre-school education, which I've shared with my readers in my old blog. I think I might just copy and paste the entry here, just for the benefit of those who might want to read it. :)
After a short rest, we continued our journey to Kayu nasi kandar! Berapa kali tah I need to say this but the Kayu there is just so much better. Yes, we had nasi kandar on the same night! Ahh, it was so satisfying even though lepas tu dah rasa full gila. Zaki slept over at Ted's place that night. (Thanks Ted for the hospitality, and to Neesa, saya tak tau how to send your love to Ted tapi saya telah surround dia dengan my lovesick aura. Enough,no?Hehe). The next day we went to Queensbay Mall - mall terhebat outside KL, if you compare it with the ones in Kedah! This is according to the man who stays in Kedah ok, not me. But Queensbay is almost complete and you almost feel like you're in KL once you step into the mall. With shops like forever 21, MNG, topshop and restaurants like TGIF, Paddington House of Pancakes, Starbucks etc, very KL-like, right?? If only it wasn't the fasting month, I would've brought him to Tanjung, to try the apom pisang, pisang goreng near Batu Ferringghi, mee udang Sungai Dua and just lots lots lots more places to eat. Since our activities were pretty limited, we opted to watch a movie. Dating all the way in Penang ok, nothing less! LOL. ;p After that jalan-jalan lagi until it's nearly time for berbuka. We didn't berbuka together because he received an invitation he couldn't resist from Ted - to berbuka at Equitorial Hotel, while my family went for berbuka at Hai Nan. Yes, second time for me, two days in a row but I still ate like I haven't tasted the dishes for years. Hehe. I bade farewell to my fiance as he left for Alor Star that very same night. :( To drown my sorrow, I had nasi lemak Liverpool in Batu Lanchang. Haha. Simple RM1.50 nasi lemak but delicious! I ate it at Kayu, with teh ais, while the rest of the family had supper. I told you, balik Penang je sure keep on eating like there's no tomorrow because there are lots of good food there. Itu pun nasib it's the fasting month, or else I don't know how much I'd put on weight. We always eat what we couldn't find in KL, that's why selalu makan puas-puas, because we don't know when we'd come back again. So definitely no Western food for me in Penang. Rugi.
*sigh* It was such a short but definitely memorable trip for me and Zaki. It was like sharing a huge part of my life, a huge part of who I am, with him. I was 'introducing' him to Penang, even though he has been there countless times, but it was his first time there with me. I'm so glad now whenever we reminisce about my childhood, he'd have a clearer picture of what I mean. Definitely another sweet milestone in our relationship don't you think so:)))

what's your flavour?

Only three working days for me this week! Yeayyy. Yesterday was a public holiday and I'm on leave this Friday. :)) Because guess what, I'm going back to PE to the NANG! It's a compulsory visit. Ever since we've stopped going back to Penang for Raya, we've tried to make it a point to go back during Ramadhan. Going back to Penang, for whatever reason, is fine with me. Of course I miss celebrating Raya there but there's no point of going back because all my relatives will come to KL anyway. And this year, they'll celebrate it at our house. Double the fun and joy! The sweeter part of going back this time around is that most probably Mr.Fiance will be joining us there! Insya Allah. If that happens, oh boy, I'm going to have such a field day bringing him around and showing him all the places that I used to go as a kid. And of course, I will introduce him to all my favourite restaurants/stalls/whatnots. I doubt we'd have that much time to taste it all since it's the fasting month and we can only eat after buka puasa and how much nasi kandar can one take per night anyway? (quite a lot for me!;p) Just thinking about it makes me weak. Hehe.
We haven't put much thought on kuih raya this year. Oh god, how could we totally miss out on such an important part of raya?? My ultimate favourite is rolled pineapple tarts. It must be rolled. I won't take it any other way. Somehow it's just not the same if you can see the pineapple jam kan? Which reminds me...I don't think we've ordered or bought any of those this year! Must buy! Another favourite of mine is batang buruk. My officemate sells the best batang buruk (and the only batang buruk that I've ever tasted). Yes I've only started 'liking' this kuih ever since I tried hers. Before this, I wasn't interested at all. Hmmm. Maybe next time we'll talk about my favourite raya dish pulak ok. Let's get back to work (and lots of it). :)
