the almost-forgotten trip

How time flies! My father’s company is organizing a short trip to Medan next week and the whole family’s going! A short get-away is what I need so I’m pretty excited about the trip. I don’t know what to expect in Medan, though. I’ve been to Jakarta and its sophisticated shopping malls but do they have shopping malls in Medan? Don’t worry, I don’t really expect anyone to answer that question because all I have to do is pay a visit to my best friend, Mr.Google. In just seconds, I’ll get the answer to my questions. It saves time and it’s so convenient. That is why I’m always amazed (and annoyed) at people who ask ‘amazingly simple’ questions to others. For example, you’re about to send a letter out to someone who lives in Bandar Baru Bangi and you realized that you don’t have the recipient’s postcode. You panic, you crack your brains trying to think of someone you know who lives in BBB or somewhere nearby or someone you think would have an answer to your question, you make phone calls, you search for previous mails hoping to find a clue and the likes of it. When all you actually have to do is Google. And there you have it, BBB’s postcode in its full glory. And it will take you about 10 seconds or so, depending on the internet connection. I went to a Google course recently (yes, we need a course to teach us how to use Google) and it’s true what the teacher said. Next time somebody asks you a silly question (I think he said stupid but I wouldn’t say ‘stupid’ because no question is ever really stupid because if you don’t ask then you’re stupid), just tell that person ‘Lu Google lah sendiri’. Hmm, I kinda like it. :)

Back on the Medan trip, I’m not sure if shopping (at shopping malls) is part of the itinerary because since the trip is for everyone and is not just about me and my needs, I have a strong feeling that we’re going sightseeing a lot and we’d most probably stop at some huge gedung kain/batik/kebaya lace/net. I’m all for kain, man. I am the most kain person in my family, I don’t mind looking at fabrics, materials and all that jazz but I have just made a resolution (that I’m finding hard to keep, already!) that I won’t be buying anymore materials as I have tons that haven’t been turned into something that I can wear yet. It’s all going to be ready made from now on, whenever possible. I’m sorry I’m just not a sightseeing person unless the sight that I’m seeing is a row of shops. I’m more into ‘culture’ (haha). When I go to a foreign place, I like to try out their food (when one is in Paris, have macarons please or if you’re in Indonesia, nasi padang lah what else), travel by public transport, watch a show at a nearby theatre (London), have a spa treat (oh must-do!), hang out by the beach (Gold Coast) and so on. But of course if you’ve travelled to the other end of the world just to see the Colosseum, an obligatory memory card or two worth of pictures is a must. At most, my brain can only give half an hour of its attention.

When we were in Rome, our tour guide was an engineer so he gave great, intelligent details of everything we saw. But he was just too academic for us that when we were making rounds at the Colosseum, we pushed my mother to listen to him while we, on the other hand, totally ignored him! She had to end up nodding at appropriate pauses and asked some polite questions. I mean, we can’t ALL be ignoring him right? My mother got so mad at us for ditching her like that. My father lagi lah lost case, bailed out after 15 minutes je kot and he didn’t even try to hide his boredom. Haha. I think it runs in the family. But he is worse, all he wanted to do in Rome was to sit in the hotel room, watch TV and play poker.

Nevertheless, I am excited. I love spending quality time with my family! I’ll write about the trip when I get back insya Allah. Just writing about the impending trip is therapeutic. It’s making me all happy and fine even though today is Monday. But it’s also probably down to the fact that I had another great weekend with another round of great purchases. Every week macam ni boleh muflis! If I were to give the same excuse to myself every week and by the way the excuse is ‘I should reward myself for being permanent’ (GOV lingo), I would no longer have a permanent house, car, clothes, bag because I will have to sell it all off to pay for my debts.
