Starting 1 January 2010, mas kahwin for Selangor will be a minimum of RM300! :) Boy am I glad my alamat kad pengenalan (inside joke please) is in Selangor or what?! But as for us, we have actually decided on my mas kahwin prior to the engagement and coincidentally, the amount we've agreed upon is higher than the minimum amount set by the department. Thank God for family tradition. So we're all good and he's not shocked or anything. Hehe. I fully support the move, by the way. I totally agree with the fact that we should pay more attention to mas kahwin rather than hantaran because mas kahwin is compulsory and the bride gets to keep it, unlike hantaran. So kudos to Selangorian girls! Your true 'value' is actually reflected in the mas kahwin. Instead of receiving say, RM1 million for your wang hantaran, you can now make that RM1 million as your mas kahwin. Or at least a portion of it. But what I'm afraid of is that after this, people will start 'comparing' and 'competing' with one another on mas kahwin, now that wang hantaran is so last year. Again, the whole purpose and intent of raising the amount is lost. And the cycle continues.
